Coal Miner's Daughter

Finally got around to watching Coal Miner's Daughter. I've always caught portions of this movie on TV, but never sat down and watched the whole film.

It is the classic rags to riches story, but what made this movie special was Sissy Spacek. What a sincere and endearing performance!

Sophie's Wedding Dress

I was watching Mamma Mia on TV this evening and fell in love with Sophie's wedding dress! The Grecian draping, flowing fabric, and touch of sparkle is so romantic. :-)

Greenberg

Watched Greenberg, Noah Baumbach's latest film this weekend. I've seen two of Noah's films now-The Squid and the Whale and Greenberg and I've really enjoyed both of them. The awkwardness in Greenberg had me chuckling and the offbeat characters really pull you in. I was impressed with Ben Stiller's acting skills and it was nice to see him take on a different role. Next I believe I will check out Baumbach's 2007 film, Margot at the Wedding. Anyone else a fan of Baumbach's films?

Funny Face

This past weekend I watched the lovely musical, Funny Face. It stars Audrey Hepburn, Fred Astaire, and Kay Thompson. Audrey has such grace and elegance on screen-she's really one of a kind. Her "Basal Metabolism" dance number is definitely something to see! Next weekend I plan on watching another Audrey film-"Roman Holiday."

The Virgin Suicides

Netflix movie of the week: The Virgin Suicides.
Yet another movie I've been meaning to see for quite some time.
The music, the acting, the cinematography, everything clicked. I thought it was a great film. Sad, strange, and beautiful.

Chocolat

Netflix movie night! I'll be watching Chocolat, which I've been meaning to see for quite some time. Anyone else seen it and enjoyed it?

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist

Watched Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist the other day and thought it was pretty cute. I love Michael Cera and I love that the setting of the movie is all in the timespan of one evening in the city.

Man on Wire

Netflix movies have arrived! One of my rentals is the 2008 documentary, Man on Wire. The film chronicles Philippe Petit's 1974 high-wire walk between the Twin Towers of New York's World Trade Center. Can you imagine seeing someone doing this!?

Margaret Kilgallen

This weekend I watched the documentary "Beautiful Losers." I loved the film, and felt so moved and inspired by these fabulously talented, creative people. I felt very drawn to the work of Margaret Kilgallen, which was one of the central highlights of the film. I had seen her work online before, but didn't know anything about the artist. In the film she talks about her love of handpainted signs, typographic styles, elements of folk art, and graffiti-specifically freight train graffiti. I was so saddened to hear of her death, in 2001 (at the age of 33), from complications of breast cancer, three weeks after giving birth to her daughter, Asha. A beautifully creative person taken away too soon.

The Turning Point

Rented The Turning Point from Netflix this week and loved it! The dancing is absolutely beautiful and Shirley MacLaine and Anne Bancroft are terrific in this film. If you are a fan of ballet it's a movie you must see! Leslie Browne and Mikhail Baryshnikov are amazing to watch. The film tells the story of two women who were childhood friends and former competitors in the world of ballet. Shirley Maclaine's character, DeeDee, left ballet after becoming pregnant. Ann Bancroft's character, Emma stays with the company and ballet. This daughter grown up is Leslie Browne, also a dancer, who is invited to join the ballet company by Emma. The reunion of DeeDee and Emma stirs up old memories and conflict. Weaved in the film are many ballet performances by the company. :-) I hope I can eventually find this movie somewhere to purchase!
